MLSA Link Sharer
A Chrome extension built for Microsoft Student Ambassadors following the Community Influencer path. It automatically generates Microsoft resource links containing the ambassador's Contributor ID, making it easier to share eligible content with proper attribution.

As a Microsoft Student Ambassador following the Community Influencer path, I identified a repetitive task in sharing learning resources: adding the correct Contributor ID to Microsoft URLs before distributing them.
I developed MSA Link Sharer to automate this process directly in the browser. Instead of manually editing URLs, ambassadors can generate an attributed link from the active tab, copy it, save it for later, or share it directly on social media.
Beyond link generation, the extension maintains a local history of saved resources, helping users keep track of content they have learned from or shared.

Core features
- Automatic link attribution: Retrieves the active tab's URL and appends the ambassador's Contributor ID using the
wt.mc_idtracking parameter. - URL normalization: Removes language-locale segments such as
en-us/andfr-fr/when present. - Flexible link generation: Uses
?or&as appropriate when adding the tracking parameter to a URL. - Resource management: Allows users to save generated links to a personal resource list.
- Social sharing: Provides direct sharing options for X and LinkedIn.
- Local resource history: Keeps a history of saved resources and supports exporting that history as a CSV file.
- Contributor ID configuration: Stores the ambassador's ID automatically and synchronizes it across signed-in Chrome devices.
- Domain awareness: Warns users when a URL does not appear to belong to a recognized Microsoft domain, while still allowing them to proceed.
Technical implementation
Browser-based workflow
The extension integrates into Chrome's browsing workflow, using the active tab as the starting point for link generation. This eliminates the need to copy a URL into a separate tool or manually modify its query string.
The main processing flow is:
- Retrieve the current tab URL.
- Normalize the URL by removing an applicable locale segment.
- Add the
wt.mc_idattribution parameter using the configured Contributor ID. - Present the generated link for copying, saving, or sharing.
- Record saved resources in the user's history.
This workflow combines URL processing and lightweight resource management in a tool that remains accessible from the browser toolbar.
URL parameter handling
One important implementation detail is handling URLs that already contain query parameters. Appending a tracking parameter incorrectly can produce malformed URLs or overwrite existing attribution information.
For example:
| Original URL | Generated URL |
|---|---|
https://learn.microsoft.com/azure/ | https://learn.microsoft.com/azure/?wt.mc_id=studentamb_123456 |
https://learn.microsoft.com/azure/?view=example | https://learn.microsoft.com/azure/?view=example&wt.mc_id=studentamb_123456 |
The following example illustrates a more robust approach to URL parameter handling. It is illustrative code, not a verified reproduction of the repository's implementation.
function addContributorId(url, contributorId) {
const parsedUrl = new URL(url);
parsedUrl.searchParams.set(
"wt.mc_id",
contributorId
);
return parsedUrl.toString();
}Using the native URL API makes query-string manipulation easier to reason about and preserves unrelated parameters. The set() method also avoids creating multiple values for the same tracking parameter.
The actual implementation additionally handles locale normalization, as described in the project documentation.
Contributor identity and browser synchronization
The extension lets users configure their Contributor ID once instead of entering it for every resource.
According to the project documentation, the identifier is saved automatically and synchronized across signed-in Chrome devices. This is useful for ambassadors who work across multiple browser sessions or computers.
The configured ID follows the documented studentamb_###### format and is used when generating attributed resource URLs.
Resource history and export
Link generation is only part of the workflow. The extension also lets ambassadors save resources and revisit them later.
The history export feature produces a CSV file, making saved resource records available outside the extension for further review or organization.
This adds a lightweight resource-tracking capability without requiring a separate web application or external account system.
Microsoft domain awareness
The extension warns users when a URL does not appear to originate from a recognized Microsoft domain. Importantly, the warning does not automatically prevent link generation.
This design provides a useful reminder to verify resource eligibility while preserving flexibility. Domain recognition should not be confused with a guarantee that a particular resource qualifies under the Microsoft Student Ambassadors program rules.
Installation and configuration
MSA Link Sharer can be installed from its source repository using Chrome's developer mode:
- Open
chrome://extensions. - Enable Developer mode.
- Select Load unpacked.
- Choose the extension's extracted project folder.
- Pin the extension to the Chrome toolbar.
- Open the extension and enter the Contributor ID.
The extension is distributed as an open-source project through GitHub.
What this project demonstrates
- Workflow automation: Removing repetitive manual URL editing from a real ambassador activity.
- Browser extension development: Integrating a utility directly into the user's browsing workflow.
- URL processing: Managing query parameters and locale normalization while preserving existing URL information.
- Local resource management: Combining saved links, history tracking, and CSV export in a lightweight tool.
- Social platform integration: Supporting direct sharing to X and LinkedIn.
- User-centered engineering: Building a focused solution around a practical need encountered through participation in a developer community.
MSA Link Sharer demonstrates how a small browser extension can improve a recurring workflow by combining automation, attribution, and resource organization in a single interface.
